South: Farewell GDR / Birth of a Democracy

    A Video by Licinio Azevedo
In the 1980s, many young Mozambicans left their native land to seek better lives in Germany. Once there, they found themselves in a hostile land where they were openly slurred, and where police did not intercede when they were beaten.
When this inhospitable welcome caused many to repatriate, they often found themselves outsiders in their homeland. Groups calling themselves "ninjas" antagonize the returning Mozambicans, treating them as "Europeans lost in Africa." And they must still face the economic hardships which they fled in the first place.
